Family Kitchen, RBG Kew
How we created a BREEAM Excellent restaurant
| BREEAM | Excellent |
| Floor area | 1150sqm |
| Recycling | 80% of hot water use recycled heat from kitchen and dining areas |
Working as part of the CityAxis design & build team, Mulroy developed and delivered HOK’s planning approval for the design for a new 1,150sqm, 250-cover restaurant at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew that aims to educate children in the value of healthy eating and promote Kew’s mission of understanding plants.
As Executive Architect during the technical and construction stages, our role was to make the project even better. We exceeded the brief and obtained BREEAM Excellent in various ways including reducing the thickness of the Cross Laminated Timber structure that resulted in smaller foundations, changing the oil-based polyurethane insulation to a thicker mineral wool insulation with better thermal and fire performance but lower embodied energy, including more solar photovoltaic panels on the roof, and simplifying detailing of the building shell to increase construction speed and to improve quality control on site.
