Lily Pond House

How we brought Los Angeles to London

Height of atrium 5.5m
Number of lily ponds 2
Number of stairs moved 1
The brief was to renovate this mid-terrace, double-fronted Victorian house in Muswell Hill and provide the main living areas adjacent to the rear garden. The problem was that the garden was located at basement level with access via a narrow stair and the existing living rooms were located at the entrance level, one floor above the garden. Adding a ground floor extension and roof terrace to the house was nothing compared to the radical alterations internally that included moving a 4-storey stair and taking out a floor. The internal changes created a dramatic atrium that provides clear views of the main living rooms in the basement and lets light flood into the new dining area.
We took our inspiration from the Los Angeles houses by Pierre Koenig when developing the building’s relationship with the garden. Working with talented garden designer Manoj Malde, a series of pools and terraces always ensure seating is located in the sun despite the rear garden facing north.
